How do I check if my game is cancelled due to wet weather?
The short version
Games go ahead unless we tell you otherwise.
If your game's cancelled, you'll get a notification in the SportUP app. No SMS, no carrier pigeon. Just push notifications, so make sure they're on.
You can also check the wet weather page anytime: sportup.com.au/wet-weather
Please don't ring or DM the team for updates. Every call we make hits the app and the wet weather page at the same time. You'll know when we know.
When do you make the call?
Queensland weather doesn't read scripts and can change in the late afternoon quickly, so we make calls in stages.
- 4:00pm: First call. We look at the forecast, court and field conditions, and any venue closures.
- 30 minutes before your comps first game: On-site call around 6pm. If conditions have shifted since 4pm, the host makes a fresh call when they arrive.
- During play: Rolling call. If lightning or heavy rain rolls in mid-game, the host can stop play either temporarily or in rare ocassions, cancel the rest of games that night. You will get an app notification if this ever happens.
What do you play through?
More than most people expect.
- All indoor games, regardless of weather.
- Outdoor courts and fields in all levels of rain. We have sweepers and brushes to help remove puddles from courts if needed.
- Hot weather. Hydrate, rest between points, use the bench.
What do you cancel for?
- Lightning or electrical storms at outdoor venues. Non-negotiable.
- Venue closures by the facility owner (council fields, school courts, etc.).
- Surface conditions that genuinely can't be made playable.
My game's on but my team doesn't want to play. What happens?
It's a forfeit under our forfeit and default policy.
When will my cancelled game be rescheduled?
- We aim to reschedule games whenever we can. This may extend the season end date. The maximum we can extend season date by is 2 weeks.
- Sometimes we'll run double-headers to catch up. Two games, one night.
- In rare cases (venues without lights, no make-up slots, late-season cancellations), some games can't be replayed within two weeks. We handle these case by case.
How do I make sure I get the notifications?
Because weather calls go through in-app notifications only:
- Open the SportUP app.
- Go to your phone's settings for SportUP.
- Make sure notifications are enabled.
- Captains, double-check yours. You're the relay to your team. Notifications will go out to all players though.
If notifications are off, you won't hear from us. The wet weather page is your backup: sportup.com.au/wet-weather
